This activity is ideal for couples and families with children, but is also suitable for other people. If you’ve always wanted to immerse yourself in a colorful world full of butterflies, the Kuang Si Butterfly Park is the right place for you. The park is runned, as far as we know, by a Dutch couple and some other foreigners work there too. This isn’t so common in Laos and surprised us a little. Well, all the staff is really friendly and try their best to make your stay as pleasant as possible. We really appreciated that and enjoyed our stay in the butterfly park a lot.

When you arrive at the reception, you have to choose which ticket you want. There are three options, as you can see from the picture. In our opinion it’s totally worth it to take one of the delicious deals with coffee and cake. Both the coffee and the cake were really good. Generally speaking, the price is definitely worth the experience. Not only will you see many butterflies native to Laos, you’ll also experience some other things. Curious? Then you better continue reading.

What makes this place so special?

First of all we would like to mention that the atmosphere of the Kuang Si Butterfly Park is really breathtaking. The park is in close proximity to the Kuang Si Waterfall and you can even see a part of it while walking around. There are several different areas with butterflies. You’ll get a map for that so  you always know where you currently are. Of course, you should also know what butterflies you are dealing with. Therefore, there’s not only a map, but also a foiled brochure with further information. However, the park isn’t just about seeing beautiful butterflies, it’s also about learning more about them. For this purpose there’s an area where you can generally learn more about the life of butterflies and see them in their various stages.

In this video you can get an impression about the Kuang Si Butterfly Park. Looks quite interesting, doesn’t it? Well, that’s by far not all. Other peculiarity is the parks cafeteria. Here you can not only exchange your coupon for coffee and cake, but also enjoy a natural fish spa.  Even if you tried the typical fish spa before, we guarantee you, you’ll like this one even more.  You can put your feet in a natural stream of the waterfalls and wait for the kois to swim past. If the kois don’t want to come by themselves, that’s no problem at all. You can attract them with food. Just ask at the cafeteria and you’ll get some.

And that’s how a natural fish spa looks like. It’s self-explanatory that the experience is very different from having the cornea nibbled by doctor fish in massage parlors. Especially since the procedure is controversial and there are experts that even assume a health risk. Whether that is the case remains to be seen. We think the whole thing is somewhat exaggerated. Anyway, natural fish spas are definitely better!

You can see that there are many reasons to visit this place. And there’s one we didn’t even mention yet. One great thing about the project is that it’s not just about making money. It’s also about educating Laotian children, especially poor ones from the mountains, and to offer them wonderful excursions to the park. For this purpose, buses are organized and classrooms are built. In any case, an exemplary measure that you can support by buying souvenirs.

How to get to the Kuang Si Butterfly Park

Like the Bear Rescue Center, the Kuang Si Butterfly Park is right by the waterfall, although the park is a few hundred meters away and you’ll have to pay a separate entrance fee. The procedure however is the same. Just tell a tuk tuk that you want to go to the Kuang Si Falls. And as soon as you have visited the waterfall, you can go to the park on the way back.

Opening hours

The opening times of the park are not the same as for the waterfall. The park opens a little later and closes a little earlier.  It’s open daily from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm.
